ELECTRIFYING PROJECT AT BONHAM HIGH SCHOOL
Bonham ISD - 11/14/08
Bonham ISD is excited to announce the implementation of an electric vehicle (EV) project at Bonham High School. Students and staff will convert a gasoline powered vehicle into an electric powered vehicle. Superintendent Sonny Cruse stated, "This project is the brain child of district technology technician Mike Barkley. He has been working for over a year to get this project started."

Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Barkley several businesses have donated materials. Bonham Chrysler provided a Mazda B2200 PU for the sum of $1. The towing of the vehicle from Bonham Chrysler to BHS was performed by Bill's Auto Body of Bonham. The electric motor for the vehicle was donated by Daubitz A/C & Heating of Midlothian, TX. Most recently, Georgia Tech University has donated 22 nickel cadmium batteries for the project. Other businesses are highly encouraged to join the district in the completion of this project. If interested please contact Mike Barkley at mike.barkley@bonhamisd.org.

This collaborative "hands on" learning experience will offer "real world" lessons on alternative fuel/energy choices and their benefits to our environment.

Upon completion the vehicle the group hopes to have it painted and labeled with sponsor names similar to a NASCAR type vehicle. The vehicle will be used by the Bonham ISD technology department.

Bonham ISD - 11/03/08
The Friends of Rachel (FOR) program is based around Rachel Scott's ideals of spreading acts of kindness and compassion. As part of Bonham ISD Rachel's Challenge program, a "chain reaction of kindness" was started by the FOR group at L H Rather Junior High. This group led the campus in a fund raising effort for the devastated schools of Hurricane Ike. LHR students were asked to start a "change reaction" by giving their spare change to this cause. A contest between the two grades (7th and 8th) was held for three weeks. The total collected was $126. 71 with the 7th grade donating the most ($80.76). This money will be sent to the Rachel's Challenge organization then distributed among the schools affected by Hurricane Ike. FOR representative, Jenna Toland presented a "chain reaction" trophy to 7th grade FOR representative, Kala Simpson, during a general assembly held on Thursday, October 30, 2008. Treat Texas children to a safe Halloween
Bonham ISD - 10/30/08
Texas drivers are asked to drive safely around areas where children are likely to gather this Halloween. And trick-or-treaters are asked to make sure they behave safely as well.

"We're expecting more children and adults to be out on Halloween this year because it falls on a Friday. Slow down and watch for pedestrians.
If you're planning to attend a Halloween party, please designate a sober driver," said Col. Stan Clark, interim director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

"Pedestrians should make sure to look both ways before crossing a street, and they should choose costumes that will be easy for drivers to see," Clark said.

Following these safety tips will help keep trick-or-treaters safe.

Have a safe costume:

Avoid toy guns and knives - they could be mistaken for the real thing.

Wear costumes that are light in color and short enough to avoid tripping.

Wear shoes that fit.

Place reflective material on the costume, so drivers can see you.

Avoid masks - use face paint instead for better visibility and peripheral vision.

Carry a flashlight.

Keep these tips in mind:

Look both ways before crossing roadways. Always walk, don't run.

Cross the roadway at intersections and crosswalks when possible.

Travel in groups with adult supervision.

Do not enter the cars and homes of strangers. Avoid homes without visible porch lights.

Make sure children know their home phone number and how to call 911 or their local emergency number if they have an emergency or become lost.

Take all treats home for an adult to inspect before eating anything. Never eat unwrapped candy.
